Tottenham Hotspur backed to make a move for Juventus and USA midfielder Weston McKennie

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie ahead of the January transfer window, as per Football.London.

The former Schalke 04 midfielder is currently with the USA national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was notably impressive in the 0-0 group-stage draw against England.

McKennie is an important part of manager Massimiliano Allegri’s side. His contract will only expire in the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt), which won’t rush Juve into selling the midfielder for a while.

But former USA and Liverpool shot-stopper Brad Friedel has now backed Spurs to go after the midfielder if the finances work in their favour. He told Online Casino (h/t Football.London):

“If the finances work then Tottenham should definitely be in for McKennie. He’s the best central midfielder the US has ever had. Against England he showed his quality and I think he’d be a brilliant addition for any big side in Europe.”

McKennie is impressive on both ends of the pitch. He is also an able right-sided midfielder and if things align, perhaps manager Antonio Conte can even use him as a right-wing-back.

What should Spurs do?

We have Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty, and Djed Spence down that flank but they are yet to convince fans that they are worthy of being Tottenham’s first-choice right-backs for several years down the line.

That being said, McKennie should only be signed with a view to adding depth and quality in our midfield. It simply cannot be a way to get out of signing a right-wing-back unless he is solely eyed by the former Inter Milan manager for that position.

It remains to be seen if Juventus are open to letting him go in the near future and if they value him around a price range that favours Spurs. But he is a nice option to add to the squad – one that has a lot of years ahead of him to hone his skills even further.
