‘I need to get us closer to our levels’ admits David Moyes as the West Ham boss dismisses claims ahead of our European quarter-final.

David Moyes has had a big target on his back of late and faced unprecedented pressure following West Ham’s 5-1 defeat to Newcastle in midweek.

After picking up two vital – if scrappy – wins either side of that thumping, though, the Hammers have boosted their Premier League survival chances.

While there is still work to do on that front, the outlook is certainly a lot brighter. And attentions now turn back to Europe for Moyes and West Ham.

They face Belgian side Gent in the first leg of their Europa Conference League quarter-final this Thursday evening.

West Ham saw off AEK Larnaca with ease in the last 16, cruising to a 6-0 aggregate victory.

That only served to reinforce opinion that West Ham are one of the favourites to win the competition having also made the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.

Many West Ham fans are unhappy with the style of play and performance levels of the team under Moyes this season.

And speaking ahead of the Gent clash, the manager has conceded he knows he needs to be getting a better tune out of his expensively assembled side.

‘I need to get us closer to our levels’ admits Moyes as the West Ham boss dismisses claims ahead of the European quarter-final.

Speaking to UEFA, the Scot says he is not so arrogant as to buy into claims West Ham are favourites to brush aside Gent.

“You can never tell with football,” Moyes said ahead of the first leg.

“I would never ever be presumptuous to think that (we are favourites) because we need to improve.

“I need to get us closer to our levels.”
