Manchester United defender Luke Shaw admits that he is the one to be blamed for the 1-0 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion.
While defending a corner in the last few seconds of the game, Shaw used his hand to clear the ball.
The referee didn’t catch the error at first but pointed to the spot after VAR’s intervention.
After the game, the defender spoke to Sky Sports (via Manchester Evening News): “It hurts, it hurts a lot. It was the last minute, the last action, really, I think.
“I got a little nudge but, of course, the hand shouldn’t be there, I own up to it and take it on the chin. I cost us the game and it’s tough.
“I can’t even explain why my hand is up there.”
Luke Shaw is a fall guy, United front line to be blamed
The 27-year-old was arguably United’s best performer tonight before his last-minute brain-fade moment.
He was so comfortable in the centre-back spot that it did not feel like he was playing out of position.
He misplaced only five of the 44 passes he made today. Whenever Danny Welbeck dropped deep to collect the ball, he followed the striker and tried to put pressure on him.
He has shown great hawk-eye vision to read the danger and does not shy away from making runs to contribute to attack at times.
Shaw is guilty of conceding the penalty criminally but the three points dropped off because of United’s poor attacking display.
Antony, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial had great opportunities to score but fluffed their lines when it mattered most.
Bruno Fernandes’ slipped a sublime pass to Antony in the second minute of the game, but the Brazilian winger fired his shot wide. Things could have been different if he had given a perfect start to the Red Devils.
