HotspurHQ Awards; Tottenham’s Top Underperformers this Season

Unfortunately for Columbian Davidson Sanchez, in being awarded HotspurHQ’s disappointment of the season, he takes the prize to be avoided. Having said that, others endured difficult campaigns at N17, with Harry Winks, Pierluigi Gollini, and Tanguy N’dombele our dishonourable mentions.

Harry Winks – Time at Tottenham coming to an end?

At this point, it’s hard not to feel a bit sorry for Harry Winks, as although he isn’t good enough to be a starter for Tottenham, he just about fits the bill as a squad player.

In reality, that perfectly sums up his functionality this season, as although he appeared 19 times in the league, he accumulated just 905 minutes. Winks has registered just one assist and two bookings this season, last starting a game for Conte’s side back in late February.

Surprisingly, the situation for Winks has been brighter under Conte than his predecessor. Whilst Nuno Espirito Santos was in charge, the Englishman started just one game, a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace, failing to feature again for the Portuguese outside Conference League games.

Conte’s appointment marked a brief change for Winks. In the Italian’s early days in North London, he played a fairly regular role; however, his lack of creativity and sideways passing frustrated Spurs fans, with the upgrade to Rodrigo Bentancur in January marking a significant improvement.

At 26, Winks is still young enough to secure another long-term contract and would likely do a job at a lower-level Premier League club. However, in reality, given his disappointing season coupled with the expected rebuild at Tottenham, Winks may ultimately find himself surplus to requirements this summer in North London.
