“He was their best player”- Matt Doherty praises Tottenham transfer target for display vs Portugal

International: Matt Doherty praises Tottenham target Mohammed Kudus for his game against Portugal

Right-back Matt Doherty has praised AFC Ajax and Ghana international Mohammed Kudus for a good game against Portugal. The 22-year-old is of interest to Tottenham Hotspur.

Kudus started the game for his country’s opener against Portugal on Thursday. The attacker was one of the best players on the pitch and even assisted his side’s first goal in their 3-2 loss against the European side.

Doherty, who has been giving his views about teams and players in the World Cup this year praised the attacker for his performance, as quoted on the Tottenham Hotspur website (h/t Football. London).

“Portugal was a good game. Ghana looked a threat in the second half. I was surprised Ghana took off Kudus (on 77 minutes) with no apparent injury, I thought he was their best player.”

The 22-year-old has been in exceptional form this season. The Ghana international has played in 21 games so far in all competitions, scoring 10 goals in the process, including four in six Champions League appearances.

An attacking midfielder who is also capable of playing on the wings, he is someone Antonio Conte could do with in his team. While the Italian manager has some top-class attackers at his disposal, recent injuries to Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison have proved otherwise.

Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil have not been able to perform up to the expected level and this has called for reinforcements up front. Kudus, in such a case, makes an ideal target to go after.

Moreover, he can play as an attacking midfielder – a profile we lack. Pairing him with one of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Rodrigo Bentancur would be a bit risky but exciting whenever we are in need of a goal.

The attacker is just 22 years of age and has huge potential in him, something he has shown at the biggest of the stages in world football. A move for him would be a sensible one for Spurs and Conte.

Kudus is likely to start against South Korea on Monday. It would be wise to keep an eye on the Ghanaian and scout him well before potentially making an investment in him.

Perhaps Son Heung-min can put in a few good words about Spurs in his ears…
