Gent have sent a classy West Ham message after a tragic incident following Europa Conference League quarter-final clash.

Sometimes things happen which give everyone a reality check over the importance of football.

We all love the beautiful game even if being a West Ham fan is filled with more downs than ups over the years.

Hammers fans – and manager David Moyes himself – were hugely disappointed with the performance in the 1-1 draw against Gent on Thursday night.

But tragic news reaching us from Belgium today has put everything into perspective, not just for West Ham but everyone.

As most West Ham fans will be well aware by now, a Hammers supporter visiting Belgium for the European match has died after being hit by a train in what officials described as an “unfortunate accident” (Sky News).

The 57-year-old climbed up an “elevation” that led to train tracks in Sint-Pieter’s Station in Gent for “unknown reasons”, a local prosecutor’s office said.

The incident happened after the side’s Europa Conference League quarter-final first leg match against Belgian side Gent on Thursday.

The West Ham fan was taken to hospital that evening where he was sadly later pronounced dead.

True class from our opponents after such a devastating loss of life.

Nobody should go to a football match and not come home.

West Ham will likely pay their respects ahead of the second leg at the London Stadium next Thursday night and Gent will no doubt play their part.

Let’s hope West Ham can progress in that fan’s memory.

May he rest in peace.
