It now only seems like a matter of time before Lisandro Martinez becomes a Man United player.
Manchester United Football Club are heading in a fresh direction under Erik ten Hag, with the early signs certainly looking positive if the game against Liverpool is anything to go by.
With new ideas comes the need to bring in players who better fit the system. Ten Hag’s plan in that regard has been clear; surround himself with familiarity.
Earlier today, there we claims suggesting that a deal for Lisandro Martinez was edging ever closer.
Now, reliable journalist Sam Pilger has given us another update in United’s pursuit of Martinez. According to him, there is now an ‘expectation’ that the 24-year-old will sign for United ‘this week’.
Pilger reaffirms the belief that the deal is very close as Ajax are now willing sellers, while the player also wants the move to happen.
The Argentine looks all set to become United’s second signing of the summer, while a deal to bring in Christian Eriksen also looks pretty close.
In terms of fit, Martinez has operated in Ten Hag’s possession-based system recently, so you’d hope that the centre-back can come right into the side if the United boss sees fit.
What that means for the likes of Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly remains to be seen. All of them probably aren’t going to get the minutes they want at United this season, so there’s a very good chance they could all be moved on in some capacity this summer.
In terms of Martinez linking up with the squad, Friday’s game against Melbourne Victory probably comes a little too soon. Perhaps next Tuesday’s match against Crystal Palace is a more realistic fixture for him to target.
