New signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez are fit enough to start Sunday’s game against Brighton, Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

Manchester United Football Club play their first competitive game of the Erik ten Hag era this Sunday, against a very decent Brighton & Hove Albion team.

The Red Devils will be hoping to kick things off with a victory, though that’s absolutely easier said than done. Graham Potter’s side play some seriously decent football and United will have to bring their A-game.

Well, ahead of that match, United have been given a double boost, with their two new signings deemed fit enough to start this game, by Erik ten Hag himself.

While speaking to the media, the boss confirmed both Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez are ready to play from the off if required – despite only having one start under their belt in pre-season.

When asked directly about Eriksen and Martinez, this is what the boss said:

“We need competition in the squad, but also we are going into a long season with a lot of games. We need a lot of good players. They are fit enough to start.” Ten Hag told the media at his presser, including the BBC’s Simon Stone.

I know it’s early days, but both look right at home in that United line-up. Martinez’s cool and calm presence absolutely rubs off on the rest of the squad and he’ll be a positive influence for a defence that has been shaky over the last couple of seasons.

Eriksen’s addition feels like an incredibly smart one. The Dane will not be called upon to start every game, but the early signs are positive. He has an eye for that killer pass, while also having the work ethic to slot directly into this starting XI from day one.

I honestly think both have a genuine shot at starting this Sunday. They’d both absolutely be in the side on merit if picked and I’m excited to see which way the boss goes for this season opener.

Do you think either or both of these guys will start? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
