Erik ten Hag responds when asked directly about signing Cody Gakpo

Erik ten Hag gave a typical response when asked directly about Man United possibly signing Cody Gakpo.

Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign Cody Gakpo for the last few months. Those rumours started over the summer, though died quickly when signing Antony took too much money out of the budget.

It always felt like a story that would pop up as the January transfer window approached. Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit coupled with Gakpo’s brilliant World Cup only intensified those transfer tales in the press.

That said, Gakpo absolutely feels like a United player. Pace, strength, work ethic, skill. The young Dutchman has it all.

After United lost 1-0 to Real Betis in a mid-season friendly game yesterday, the gaffer was asked directly about possibly signing Gakpo. He gave the typical politician’s answer, which is precisely what you’d expect.

Check out what Ten Hag had to say (via ManUtd.com) here:

“I cannot give comment on specific players, I will never do. I’ve told you before, in the summer as well, when you talked about a lot of players.

“Each player is under contract and I respect that but we make sure we are working in the background to get the right players in.”

It’s a typically-boring response, but I get it. Ten Hag doesn’t want to talk about players who are under contract, while also possibly giving out information to other clubs who could look to make a move for Gakpo.

That said, I really do believe we haven’t seen the end of this rumour. Gakpo is someone that Ten Hag knows well from his time over in the Netherlands when he was manager of Ajax.

The question is, does Ten Hag want a specialist striker? Or will someone versatile like Gakpo suffice? I’d imagine by the time next summer rolls around, the club will have two new forwards within the first-team. I’m just not convinced United have the funds to bring in a big-money signing during the January transfer window…
