Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has heaped praise on Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw following the club’s 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa this afternoon.

The Red Devils registered a hard-fought victory over the Villans at Old Trafford and the defence had a big role to play as they curbed the attacking threat of the Midlands outfit.

Lindelof was once again brilliant with his distribution and concentration from the heart of the defence. He was complemented by Shaw, who has started in central defence lately.

Speaking after the 1-0 victory, Ten Hag said that Lindelof was superb with his control, build-up play as well as his positioning.

He added that Shaw likes to play at centre-back despite being a left-back and he is pleased with how well they have fared together.

He told Manutd.com: “Victor is playing brilliantly, in and out of possession, defending in control but then in building up also he’s composed, with good positioning.”

“Shaw likes to play centre-half – he’s a full-back but he’s doing very well inside.

“You need co-operation because a back four with the midfield is always about communication, but they play very well together and we’re happy with that.”

United suffered a big setback earlier this month when Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez got injured in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

Martinez has since been ruled out for the season after a metatarsal surgery while Varane may not return for the Red Devils until the FA Cup final in June.

Hence, United’s options in central defence are limited at the moment but Ten Hag has managed to find a solution with the terrific partnership of Lindelof and Shaw.

Harry Maguire’s suspension for the FA Cup semi-final was probably a blessing in disguise. This forced the manager to play Lindelof and Shaw together.

The duo kept a clean sheet against an in-form Brighton & Hove Albion outfit and have started the next two games in central defence.

In our opinion, Ten Hag should persist with his new centre-back pairing in the Premier League until Champions League qualification is secured.
