Donny van de Beek had a thigh issue, hence why he was absent as Man United beat Arsenal 3-1.

Donny van de Beek’s situation at Manchester United was expected to wholly improve when Erik ten Hag took charge.

After all, the Dutchman worked to great success under Ten Hag at Ajax, before making the move to Manchester.

However, Van de Beek’s struggles have continued. He really didn’t show us enough during pre-season, while he’s only made a few late-game substitute appearances this term so far.

His absence from the squad for the Arsenal game had everyone talking, though now we know why the forgotten 25-year-old missed that match. He had an injury, according to the Manchester Evening News.

As things stand, the severity of the problem is not yet known, though no doubt Van de Beek is absolutely gutted. The cup competitions start up this week, which would have been the perfect opportunity for the Dutchman to start proving his worth.

With a quick turnaround before the Real Sociedad game on Thursday, I’d be surprised if we now see Van de Beek start in that one, whereas before the issue, he would have been amongst the first names on the team sheet (from our point of view anyway).

More than anything, you just hope and pray that this isn’t anything too serious. Van de Beek just cannot catch a break right now and with each passing week, it becomes harder and harder to see a way back into the fold for the former Ajax man.

I do worry that he must not be doing enough in training. Right now, I’d have him behind Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay and Fred in that deeper-lying midfield position. I’m just not sure we’re going to see Van de Beek succeed here in Manchester…
