With Arsenal missing out on two potential January signings so far, with Joao Felix and Mykhaylo Mudryk joining Chelsea, the question on the lips of most fans is whether the Gunners will be able to bring in an alternative.

Speaking to NBC Sports, David Ornstein reported that Mikel Arteta still wants to strengthen his squad, adding: “Don’t think they’re out of this just yet, in terms of reinforcing their squad.”

Then speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Ornstein elaborated that Arsenal would still like to recruit this month, and they still have time to do so.

However, the Gunners weren’t setting up an alternative deal in parallel to their pursuit of Mudryk, choosing to fully focus on that deal at the time.

They’ll have options on their recruitment list, but to an extent, they’ll be negotiating from scratch.

“There weren’t alternatives that they were pursuing,” Ornstein explained. “When you hear of clubs…going for a player and having others on the back burner…in Arsenal’s situation they didn’t have others on the back burner.

“That doesn’t mean to say that they don’t have recruitment lists and opportunities they could explore or have looked into in the past and can revisit.”

Ornstein concluded that Arsenal won’t do anything that they feel is detrimental to where they’re going, financially or in sporting terms. He still expects the Gunners to strengthen this month, but doesn’t know if they will.

It still seems very possible Arsenal will end the window without any new signings, which would certainly be disappointing given the opportunity currently ahead of them. For now, there’s still time.
