David Ornstein has claimed that West Ham United have taken a gamble and signed a player that nobody else fancied.

West Ham signed a player in the summer transfer window after numerous other clubs looked at him, but didn’t fancy him, according to David Ornstein.

Hammers boss David Moyes brought four top-class players to the London Stadium in the summer – Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The standout from that bunch has been Kudus, although Alvarez and Ward-Prowse have been brilliant as well.

West Ham paid Ajax £38 million to bring the Ghanaian star to the London Stadium (Sky Sports), and what a signing he has proven to be!

The 23-year-old has bagged 10 goals already for the Hammers this season. It was always clear to see just how good he was during his time in Holland, so with that in mind, Ornstein’s latest claim is a surprising one…

The Athletic journalist is well-known in the game for his incredible, go-to knowledge. So we have to take what he says seriously.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Ornstein claimed that the Hammers took a punt on Kudus when no other club fancied him, when speaking on BBC Sport’s Transfer Gossip Daily podcast:

“Many clubs were looking at Mohammed Kudus, they didn’t fancy it. West Ham took that gamble and it’s paid off.”

That seems totally shocking to me. I could have told you that Kudus would be a hit in the Premier League after watching for Ajax over the past couple of years.

He has all of the attributes needed to be an absolute star in England with the Hammers, and he has already shown that he has what it takes to succeed at the very highest level of the game.

David Ornstein reckons that West Ham took a gamble by signing Kudus, but I’m not so sure. I think signing him was as close to a safe bet as you can get.
