The Athletic’s David Ornstein appeared on Peacock’s coverage of Arsenal’s game against Manchester City on Wednesday night, and he gave an update on the Gunners’ transfer market intentions.
As confirmed by many sources in recent months, Ornstein reported that Arsenal are heavily interested in Declan Rice. But he added that the West Ham man is just one of their targets.
Arsenal also hold an interest in Moises Caicedo of Brighton, Mason Mount of Chelsea, and Mohammed Kudus of Ajax.
According to the claims, Arsenal would be looking to sign either Rice or Caicedo for the 6 position, with either Mount or Kudus playing as an 8.
If that’s correct, it sounds unlikely Arsenal will be signing both Rice and Caicedo in the summer window. Perhaps that was always unlikely given the prices touted for the two players.
But Ornstein added that the Kroenkes will continue to invest in the team, not resting on their laurels after Arsenal’s qualification back to the Champions League was mathematically confirmed on Wednesday.
It looks like Mikel Arteta’s side will fall short of the Premier League title this year, following the defeat to City this week.
But with such a young team running the defending champions so close, it seems like the future should be bright.
Arsenal just need to strengthen the squad in key areas to ensure they have the same kind of depth that City do, and to provide younger alternatives in the one area of the team where many of the current options are in their thirties – the midfield.
