A Brazilian journalist has made an astonishing claim about talisman Lucas Paqueta that will infuriate West Ham fans.

West Ham fans are understandably feeling a bit sorry for themselves right now.

After ending 2023 on a high, it has been a dismal start to the new year with drab draws against Brighton and Bristol City the by-product of mounting player unavailability.

West Ham’s Brazilian talisman Lucas Paqueta suffered the recurrence of a calf injury sustained at Arsenal just 10 minutes into the his comeback in the FA Cup draw with Bristol City.

It was one of three big blows from that game as the Hammers also saw Konstantinos Mavropanos and Jarrod Bowen leave the pitch injured.

Brazilian journalist’s astonishing Paqueta claim

With the setback for Michail Antonio and both Mohammed Kudus and Nayef Aguerd away at AFCON, it has been very much doom and gloom for West Ham to start the new year.

It has exposed the lack of quality in depth within David Moyes’ squad.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

The manager was criticised by some fans for playing Paqueta in the game.

And Moyes actually voiced his own anger afterwards, appearing to blame the medical team after saying he had been told Paqueta was fit to play.

Supporters will be far from happy this evening with a report that has emerged from Paqueta’s homeland.

It will infuriate West Ham fans

Because a Brazilian journalist has made an astonishing Paqueta claim that will infuriate West Ham fans.

ESPN Brazil reporter Daniel Bocatto has claimed that his information last week was that Paqueta’s injury in the warm-up at Arsenal was a ‘dangerous’ one because the problem was located behind his left knee which could posed a risk of complications in the ligaments and tendons in his leg.

He says despite that West Ham played him in the Arsenal game where he last 33 minutes. And they didn’t learn their lesson because 10 days later against Bristol he started again ‘due to his insistence’ – further aggravating the injury.

“The ESPN information from the (medical) report found that Paquetá had a “dangerous injury”, as the problem is located behind his left knee and could cause complications in the ligaments and tendons of the midfielder’s leg,” the reporter states.

Unnecessary Paqueta aggravation

“The Brazilian felt the problem during the warm-up of the match against Arsenal, on December 28th, in the Premier League. Despite being injured, the athlete played for a few minutes, but was substituted 33 minutes into the first half.

“Paquetá did not play against Brighton and tried to return against Bristol, last Sunday (7), but he felt the problem again, which was aggravated after his insistence. Now, the Brazilian will be preserved and will undergo intense treatment in the coming weeks to return 100% to the team.”

Brazilian site Futbol Mundo is also reporting claims that Paqueta was rushed back and made the injury worse.

It is hugely frustrating to hear that West Ham and Paqueta may have shot themselves in the foot here.

If the information is accurate, the extended lay-off could have been avoided.

The glut of injuries and absence of key stars is so typical of West Ham’s rotten luck down the years.

Just when the Hammers seem to be onto something, with a real winning formula up front, it is derailed.

But there is brighter news this evening too.

Paqueta has spoken out to rubbish new claims he’ll be sidelined for two months.

There was further positive news for West Ham yesterday when we spotted a post on social media from Mavropanos which suggests his injury is definitely not serious.

And there could be yet more good news for the Hammers regarding Kudus and AFCON too.
