Bernd Leno has confirmed he is leaving Arsenal with Arsenal confirming that the keeper has signed for Fulham on what is believed to be a four-year deal.

While it has been reported that Arsenal will receive £8m for Leno, that’s not quite true.

They will receive an initial £3m plus another £1m based on appearances. That’s £4m.

Arsenal will then get another £2m if Fulham avoid relegation this season and another £2m if they avoid it next season.

Bernd Leno joined Arsenal four years ago for £22.5m when he signed a five-year deal.

While he was never a superstar goalkeeper, he was far better than many seem prepared to remember.

During Unai Emery’s first season, for example, Arsenal were so bad, it was a regular joke that Bernd Leno deserved a statue for saving us from relegation.

His injury at Brighton that season, which opened the door to Emi Martinez to play 10 times and then demand he be made the club’s number one, initially filled us all with terror.

That’s how good Leno was that season.

A reliable keeper, Leno made 125 appearances for the club, keeping 37 cleasheets.

When Aaron Ramsdale was signed and Leno benched almost immediately, there were no complaints from the German. He simply kept his head down and kept working.

We wish him all the best at his new club and hope he gets a chance to stake a claim for a Germany spot at the World Cup.
