Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder, Denis Suarez, has not played a minute of competitive football which struck me as odd.
Was he injured? Nope!
So what was going on?
Barcelona sold Denis Suarez to Celta Vigo in 2019 after his poor Arsenal loan and things seemed to going quite well for him.
He made 105 appearances for his new club over his first three seasons, including all 38 of their La Liga games last season, where he scored four and assisted six.
In the summer, however, Celta Vigo made the decision to sell Suarez to get his £97k-per-week wages off their books.
Four clubs reportedly came in with offers, all of which would have paid Suarez more according to their President, Carlos Mourino, but Suarez refused them all.
“We have given Denis Suarez four offers that increased his salary and all of them were rejected because they benefited RC Celta,” Moreno told Mundo Deportivo in a press conference on Thursday.
“He is forcing us to fire him to harm the club. I will not consent to it.
“There are many players in LaLiga who have not been called up and nothing has happened.
“Denis Suarez is the only one who has denounced his club for this because he does not want to help, he wants to harm the club.
“He has been carrying out a great smear campaign against the club for a year on all its social networks, in unconfirmed information, in opinions that speak of his close circle.”
As a result, Suarez has not featured at all this season for Celta Vigo.
He is under contract until 2024 but is being heavily linked with a move to Villarreal in January.
Suarez made six appearances for Arsenal playing a total of 95 minutes (67 in the Premier League) with zero goals and zero assists.
When Arsenal brought him in on loan he had a value of around €12m. Now, he’s valued at around €5m.
