The Mirror report that Ainsley Maitland-Niles is unlikely to make his loan move to AS Roma permanent this summer, and he’s planning an initial return to Arsenal to resolve his future.

Premier League clubs are reportedly set to be on alert as Arsenal are likely to allow the midfielder to leave for £10m – as his contract is starting to run down.

If Arsenal don’t sell Maitland-Niles or extend his contract this summer, he’ll be a free agent by the time the summer of 2023 rolls around.

24-year-old Maitland-Niles initially slotted into the starting lineup at Roma on loan, but he’s since dropped to the bench.

He’s played no minutes at all in their last four league games and come off in early substitutions in his two Conference League starts.

Even before the Mirror’s report, other outlets suggested Maitland-Niles was unlikely to join Roma permanently this summer, barring a dramatic change between now and the end of the season.

Everton were interested in Maitland-Niles last summer, and perhaps they’ll return for him again. Though it may well depend on whether they can even stay in the Premier League.
