Ange Posteocglou makes ‘integrity’ statement whilst addressing the situation of Tottenham star Eric Dier

Well, last night’s game between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley did not exactly pan out like how all of us would have hoped for it to as many expected Ange Postecoglou to weave his magic and see his side steamroll the helpless Clarets. Fair play to Vincent Kompany’s team though, they held their own.

It took a wonder striker from Pedro Porro in the 78th minute to seal the game for Spurs. The North London club kept pegging at Burnley’s defence incessantly, without any luck. On any other day, Spurs might have walked out with five goals.

One of the talking points ahead of the game was the situation of Tottenham defender Eric Dier. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Bayern had him high on the list as a potential January signing.

Subsequently, the Englishman was not in the squad to face Burnley in the FA Cup. One assumed that it had to do with the links to the German side. Apparently, that was not the case as Dier was supposedly injured.

Following the game, in the post-match press conference, speaking to Sky Sports, Ange Postecoglou was asked why Dier was not in the squad. When the manager said that he was injured, the reporter asked again if it had anything to do with the Bayern links. The Australian was not having any of it.

“He’s injured and pulled up sore in training and couldn’t take part. [The transfer rumour] is a separate issue, but don’t question my integrity. When I say he’s injured, he’s injured. Ask him, but he was injured. It’s got nothing to do with anything else.”

Tottenham boss Postecoglou defends his honour

Postecoglou was very clear in his answer. If he had not been selected, the manager says he would have revealed that. There is no point in arguing about the situation. The Englishman might actually be injured.

The manager did reveal that a transfer would be a separate issue and if something was going on, he wasn’t aware of that. This comes as no surprise as all clubs keep the cards close to their chest until a transfer goes through.

It increasingly looks like irrespective of whether he is injured or not, Eric Dier has played his last game in a Spurs shirt. It could only be a matter of time before his move to Germany becomes official.

Dier has been a decent player for the club for many years now. It’ll be sad to see him leave but that’s how football works. We have no choice but to move on to the future.
