Reiss Nelson’s Feyenoord loan spell has been on a sharp upward trajectory lately, with a slew of goals and assists over the last couple of months as he recently hit double figures for goal contributions.

But you might not have expected things to end up here. Nelson had only made four starts in all competitions for Feyenoord by March 1st, scoring one goal and providing one assist across all his appearances to that point.

Speaking to the Dutch media, Nelson says he was unlucky at first, but he remained calm and fought for his current starting role.

“I had injuries, then I had some bad luck and actually my body was not in balance those first months,” Nelson said. “I told myself that I had to be patient.

I knew it would be difficult anyway. I come from Arsenal but you don’t just walk into the Feyenoord team. Arne Slot has put together a great squad and there are fantastic players here.

“It was just difficult to get into the team. I started fighting like crazy and now I’m here.”

One of Nelson’s nine goals/assists since March 1st was an assist in the Europa Conference League semi-final first leg last Thursday, to help Feyenoord achieve a 3-2 win over Marseille.

The Dutch side now have to travel to Marseille to try and close out the win and progress to the final, and Nelson is looking forward to that opportunity.

“We are going to remember this evening for the rest of our lives, I already know that,” Nelson said.

“All the players and everyone within Feyenoord are looking forward to it. I’m having a great time here and I’m going to give everything.”
