After what feels like an age, the return of Premier League football is finally upon us, which of course, sees Tottenham return to competitive action. A busy summer has heightened expectations heading into the season, so here are some predictions for the upcoming campaign.
A quick disclaimer before the predictions; these are merely my opinion, and with no crystal ball at my disposal in nine months, they could prove wildly wrong. But with that said, let’s continue.
How Tottenham will finish in the League
The general consensus amongst fans tips Tottenham for a big season because of a largely successful summer.
Of course, a top-four finish is a minimum requirement for a so-called “successful” league campaign, but somewhat tentatively, I’d back us to go one better and finish third.
For now, Liverpool and Manchester City remain head and shoulders above the rest, but of the chasing pack, Spurs look the next best.
Chelsea and Manchester United still have work to do, and whilst Arsenal has made some good additions, Tottenham still arguably looks better on paper.
Unashamedly, there’s a certain degree of bias regarding this prediction, but given the current state of play, there’s no reason why a third-place finish isn’t Tottenham’s for the taking.
Spurs Player of the Year
Last season, Heung-Min Son was unrivaled as Tottenham’s top performer; however, this year, Harry Kane already looks back to his best.
Albeit in friendlies, five goals in pre-season for the Englishman sees him enter 2022/23 in good form, looking leaner and physically fitter than ever.
Richarlison’s presence should also ease the burden on Kane, allowing him to rest rather than religiously playing 90 minutes in every game in what is bound to be a long season for both club and country – hopefully preventing any long-term injuries.
The Englishman was immense in the latter half of 2021/22, and fans, including myself, will be eager to see him thrive ahead of a full season of Conteball.
Expect goals and assists galore this season from Kane as he once again spearheads Tottenham’s frontline.
Tottenham Hot Take
Admittedly, this hot take might be more lukewarm, but after 14 long years, I’m backing Tottenham to lift some silverware.
City and Liverpool have a relative monopoly on English football, so realistically, if Conte can guide Spurs to a trophy, it will be in the form of a domestic cup.
Jose Mourinho, and technically Ryan Mason, came close in 2021, but before that, it had been a long wait for Spurs fans to take in domestic cup final football.
Of course, there was the 2019 Champions League final, but realistically, we are unlikely to replicate such a feat again this season.
Nevertheless, after a summer of strengthening both the first team and wider squad, Conte has more depth to work with for cup ties. Combined with the Italian’s winning mentality and experience, it might just be enough for us to claim some much-needed and long-awaited silverware.
Best Signing of the Summer for Spurs
Costing £60 million, it would be easy to back Richarlison to be this summer’s standout deal, and whilst I think he will have a profound impact on the side may not be the outright best signing.
Given his performances over the last two seasons, securing Yves Bissouma for around £25 million represents incredible value, and unlike Richarlison, he should start every game when fit.
Presumably, he will partner Rodrigo Bentancur in a midfield two, and hopefully dovetail well with the Uruguayan, given their shared abilities on and off the ball.
It’s no secret several Premier League clubs held an interest in Bissouma, and for good reason, as the Malian international is undoubtedly an exceptional talent and could prove to be the bargain of the season come May.
At 25, he could be in the spine of our team for years to come, so let’s hope he starts his Spurs tenure as he means to go on.
