Gareth Southgate will name his next England squad on Thursday, prompting speculation around which Arsenal players might be involved.

Bukayo Saka should be a given, and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White were both part of England’s squad at the Euros last summer, though neither of them were Arsenal players at the time.

Since then, Ramsdale has gone on to further establish himself in the squad and make his debut in November, but he seemingly remains behind Jordan Pickford in the pecking order.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers thinks that should change in light of Ramsdale’s performances.

“For me, he’s the best English keeper at the moment. I think he’s top,” Rodgers said.

“His progression since he came to Arsenal, he’s playing for a huge club, different expectation with how to play football, I think he’s dealt with that really well.

“He plays well with his feet, he makes saves, his save from Barnes looked in, all the way. That was a great save and it kept Arsenal in front.”

As for White, his situation with England actually went backwards in 2021, as he dropped out of the squad completely towards the end of the year.

In fairness, that was partly because he’d only made it into the England squad in the first place thanks to other absentees. When those absentees returned to fitness, they retook their spots and forced White out.

But with the way the Arsenal centre-back is playing, Mikel Arteta believes he should soon get his rewards.

“We are really happy with his performances, how he has adapted, what he brings to the team certainly,” Arteta said.

“Hopefully he can get rewarded (with an England call-up), because the way he trains he looks at himself, and the performance that he is having is certainly raising the attention of a lot of people.”
